‘The Wisdom of the Sadhu: Teachings of Sundar Singh’ by Sadhu Sundar Singh
I read books by Sadhu Sundar Singh as a young believer, and while being in Nepal recently was inspired to read him again and I immediately thought that other River folks would be blessed. Sundar Singh was born into a Sikh family in northern India and at 16 years old became a follower of Jesus. Not long afterward he put on the saffron robes of a Hindu sadhu and for the rest of his life lived an ascetic, traveling life. He presented Christ through his speech and lifestyle in a way that his fellow Indians – Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Muslims – could understand. ‘This fascinating collection of his conversations and parables reveals a startlingly non-Western but deeply authentic Christianity,’ (from an Amazon review). I think that this book with its combination of Western and Eastern thought, yet thoroughly sound doctrine, and Singh’s rejection of the materialism that characterizes much of Western Christianity, is especially appealing to River people. I would also recommend any other book by the same author.
